Chaos At The Cow Palace- San Francisco, CA 10/21/07 (DVD)
Nigel McGuinness cuts a backstage promo about being champ and how it's more difficult to be champ then to win the title. Talks about his legacy, talks about Samoa Joe's reign. Nigel says he's going to give his reign 100% starting with his match tonight with Jay Briscoe. Says he won't let his legacy end here.
Chris Hero vs. Human Tornado
The second greatest wrestler in Ring of Honor today starts off the show and comes out with Larry Sweeney in tow. Larry Sweeney gets on the mic and hypes up Chris Hero. This was a fun opener but felt a tad long. Post-match Sweeney gets on the mic again and puts over Hero.
Claudio Castagnoli comes down and nails Hero with a forearm and Hero runs to the hills. Claudio gets on the mic and pulls a Mick Foley by putting over San Fransisco and the Cow Palace. Claudio says he hopes to add one pieced of history to the building today and then Roderick Strong's music hits. The music on the PA sounds awful. Roderick gets on the mic and tells Claudio "let's make history right now and wrestle for my FIP Heavyweight Championship".
Roderick Strong vs. Claudio Castagnoli (FIP Heavyweight Title Match)
Pre-Match they do some fun crowd interaction centering on the fans love of saying "HEY!" to Claudio and "BOO!" to Roderick. They go right at it immediately with a Strong lock-up (no pun intended) and roll out of the ring still locked up and continue the collar and elbow tie up into the crowd before coming back to the ring- there is a hard 20 count in the FIP title matches (whereas there is not in normal ROH matches). This one ended up being just a real solid wrestling match. Post-match Roderick puts on Claudio's jacket and leaves and Claudio chases him backstage.
FIP hype video is up next highlighting one of their DVD releases.
Adam Pearce w/Shane Hagadorn vs. Karl Anderson
Karl Anderson turns his back for some reason when the bell rings and Pearce jumps him but Anderson quickly comes back with some solid offense and then clotheslines Pearce over the top. The fans get on Pearce's case and he starts to leave. He stays and they work a decent match. Neither of these guys are overly exciting but they are both solid.
Post-Match Delirious hits the ring, Pearce bails and Delirious mauls Shane Hagadorn by biting his face. Hagadorn is a bloody mess and Delirious continues his assault. Brent Albright comes out and attacks Delirious as Hagadorn sells his beatdown.
Delirious vs. Brent Albright
The bell rings after Albright comes in and the announcer announces this as a one fall grudge match. It's off to a quick start with brawling on the outside and that's a good thing with Albright involved. A bloody Hagadorn is helped from ringside as Delirious and Albright continue to battle outside of the ring. I soon drifted into a comatose state and missed some of this due to Brent Albright being in the match but it looked mostly solid but unremarkable. Perfectly acceptable for mid-card wrestling.
Rocky Romero & Davey Richards vs. TJ Perkins & Tony Kozina
Did I mention that the PA sounds awful for the entrance music? I like TJ Perkins (Puma/Pinoy Boy) alot. He's a good little wrestler and is sporting kind of a Spanky/Paul Londonish look now. Kozina is solid and Romero/Davey are working a good fast-paced match. This was real solid, definitely a step up from the last 2 matches.
The lights go out and a woman screaming comes over the PA and thus enter Jimmy Jacobs and Necro Butcher- The Age of the Fall. Necro battles with the guardrails and runs around the ring as Jimmy enters the ring. Jimmy takes the mic. Says ROH has told them that in order to get a shot at the tag-champs they need to start winning some matches. Jimmy tells Davey and Rocky to step out of their way or be the next stepping stone. Davey and Rocky are game and they attack Jimmy and Necro but AOTF initially take the advantage and we have a match.
Rocky Romero & Davey Richards vs. Necro Butcher & Jimmy Jacobs
A lot of brawling to start this match. Lots of brawling/out of the ring action. Fans seem to be into it. They go back to the ring with double-teams on Jacobs until Necro and a chair enjoy some double teams of their own. Eventually Jacobs goes over with his new finisher. Crowd seemed to enjoy this one- it was OK.
Post-Match the Briscoes are backstage and Jay Briscoe tells Nigel he is going to be the shortest reigning champ in history. The Briscoes mention AOTF and that they haven't forgotten about them. Man Up, boys!
Austin Aries vs. Bryan Danielson (Second Match In The Best of Three Series)
This was just a solid wrestling exhibition. Not much else to say. This was real good just minus the hate that it needed to be great.
Post-Match Bryan Danielson cuts a promo and puts over Austin Aries but says that he will win the third match of the series. Aries interrupts Danielson's interview and they have some mutual respect back and forth conversation.
Nigel McGuinness vs. Jay Briscoe (ROH World Title Match)
Pretty good match between Nigel and Jay but not as good as Aries/Danielson. Danielson comes in post match and he and Nigel brawl outside the ring. Jimmy Jacobs and Necro Butcher hit the ring and they brawl with Mark and Jay Briscoe. Rocky Romero and Davey Richards hit the ring and they brawl with Jimmy Jacobs and Necro Butcher. Austin Aries comes out and hit everyone with a torpedo dive. Danielson and McGuinness have gone backstage. Everyone else brawls. Jay hits a big dive. Davey hits a SSP off the top to the outside. Crowd is really digging this. Chris Hero and Larry Sweeney hit the ring. Sweeney takes the mic and Hero does taunts throughout the ring showing his athleticism while Sweeney pimps him. Claudio comes down and Sweeney runs for the hills as Hero eats a Ricola bomb. Claudio gets on the mic and puts over the crowd.
Verdict:
This is an example of a show that is good but has nothing to put it over the top. A lot of solid stuff with Danielson/Aries being the best. I really would only recommend this to hardcore ROH fans but it's not a bad show at all.
