ROH: Rising Above PPV 12/29/07
Dave Prazak and Lenny Leonard welcome us to ROH in Manhattan. Adam Pearce and Brent Albright are in the ring. They say as a special feature tonight that they have cameras all over the building.
Cue Kevin Steen and El Generico backstage in the locker room and Steen cuts his usual solid promo and Generico provides the shtick. They are interrupted by Adam Pearce in the ring. Pearce addresses Delirious. Pearce calls out Delirious to face Brent Albright.
The ROH PPV intro video plays.
Delirious vs. Brent Albright
Delirious hits the ring. Albright is wearing a Delirious mask. Delirious is in red tonight and Albright is wearing his green mask. Delirious spits mist or water into Pearce's face and he scatters from the ring. Delirious quickly pulls the mask off of Albright. This was a good match. Delirious gets a roll-up win and then the Hangmen 3 attack until Kevin Steen and El Generico come to the aid of Delirious.
The Age of the Fall hits the ring next. Jimmy Jacobs takes the mic and cuts a promo. The Vulture Squad hits the ring. Lots of fast paced action early as we are only 13 minutes into the PPV and a ton of stuff has already happened. Good for the perspective that it's fun to watch but not so good from the character development standpoint (but most of the people watching this are going to be ROH fans so it's not that big of a deal). Julius Smokes takes the mic and says something about making this a tag-team scramble match and then Jigsaw hits a big dive to the outside, Evans is tossed out of the ring and Jacobs and Black hit stereo dives.
Winner: Delirious
Tag-Team Scramble- El Generico/Kevin Steen vs. BJ Whitmer/Adam Pearce vs. Tyler Black/Jimmy Jacobs vs. Jack Evans/Ruckus
Generico and Steen are the early highlights of this one for me as Generico hits a great high leg out of nowhere and Steen hits a double DVD with two guys. Lots of action in this one and it's a real fast paced match. Generico and Steen get the deserved victory after Steen pins Tyler Black.
The Briscoes are backstage and they hype their tag-title match tonight versus the No Remorse Corps and also talk about getting revenge on the Age of the Fall.
Lacey vs. Daizee Haze vs. Sara del Rey
They jump quickly back to the ring and to a 3-way women's match. Tammy Sytch is shown at ringside. Daizee gets the win by pinning Lacey in a good match.
They show footage of a previous show where Davey Richards and Rocky Romero injury Erick Stevens arm.
Erick Stevens vs. Davey Richards
They cut right to the ring and this match is starting. They are just pretty much going from match to match here very quickly. I kinda like the format as it keeps things moving and we are already on match number four and both guys are looking really good early. They cut to Daniel Puder during the match, as he's in the crowd, and they make a big deal of him signing autographs. Stevens losses his focus during the match as he gets distracted by Puder and Richards attacks him from behind and then clamps on a submission for the win. This was a good match.
Crowd chants "You Can't Wrestle" at Daniel Puder. Stevens gets on the mic and lays into Puder for disrespecting him by making a spectacle of himself. Stevens challenges Puder to come in the ring right now. Larry Sweeney makes his way from the back and joins Puder in the crowd. Sweeney invites Puder to the back so they can have a meeting. Claudio Castagnoli comes out and chases Larry Sweeney into the ring. Tank Toland and Bobby Dempsey come down and attack Claudio. Bobby has a shirt that says "Survivor of the Fattest." Claudio ends up clearing the ring of Toland and Dempsey. Claudio goes to attack Sweeney when he is Pearl Harbored by Chris Hero.
Chris Hero w/Larry Sweeney vs. Claudio Castagnoli
If Claudio losses this match then Sweeney gets Claudio's contract. Hero is wearing some fantastic purple and green tights and doing his usual awesome taunts. CHRIS IS AWESOME. CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP. CHRIS IS AWESOME. This was a really good match with Claudio winning.
So far we've gone a little over 50 minutes and we've had 5 matches. All of the matches have been very watchable so far with no duds. Next up, they do a split screen with the Briscoes getting ready for their match and The Age of the Fall cutting a promo.
Takeshi Morishima vs. Bryan Danielson
They start fighting outside the ring before Danielson even hits the ring for the match. Danielson gets cut early and is bleeding pretty badly. Match ends when Morishima throws the referee down and then the ring fills with people trying to stop the fight. Morishima destroys ref Bryce Rensberg with a backdrop driver. Danielson attacks Morishima with the ring bell. I liked how the first 5 matches flew by and then this one developed into a bloody match and continued a blood feud.
The Hangmen 3 are backstage and are talking about the Vulture Squad. They show a split screen between the two factions.
ROH World Tag-Team Title Match: Briscoe Brothers (c) vs. No Remorse Corps (Rocky Romero/Roderick Strong)- 2 out of 3 Falls
The announcers put over the the Briscoes have won 8 straight falls in 2 out of 3 falls matches. They haven't lost a fall in Best 2 out of 3 falls tag-matches since 2004. First fall is pretty decent. Jay Briscoe's Military Press into a Death Valley Driver remains one of my favorite moves. Roddy and Romero win the first fall with a knee off the top and then a Gibson Driver by Roddy.
Nothing wrong with this match but it's probably my least favorite match on the show so far. I like the Briscoes a lot but I think they are a better "live" team then a team that you want to watch on tape. Briscoes tie it up 1 fall to 1 fall at about the 16 minute mark. The Briscoes hit the Spike Jay Driller and win the match at around the 20 minute mark.
They show four screen back stage as they are following the Briscoes, Age of the Fall, Vulture Squad and the Hangmen 3. Very cool looking graphic IMO. They show Nigel and Aries backstage with the ref between them. Austin walks away and they cut to Austin Aries entering the ring. They haven't shown many ring intros tonight so showing his makes him look a little more important and makes this match seem bigger (I think intros also happened for Danielson/Morishima but I can't remember any others).
ROH World Title Match: Nigel McGuinness (c) vs. Austin Aries
Great spot about five minutes in as Nigel is outside the ring jawing with the crowd and is facing away from the ring. Aries hits his tornado dive through the bottom and middle ropes and nails McGuinness in the back and sends him face first into the guardrail and he gets a big gash on his eyebrow and is bleeding. About 10 minutes in and this is a really good match so far. Lots of back and forth and lots of competitive "hate" in this match as both guys are giving it their all. About 15 minutes in Aries goes for the Heat Seeking Missle again but instead eats a European Uppercut and then a Tower of London onto the floor. Fans are really into this match and behind Aries. Crazy spot about 20 minutes in as Nigel just DESTROYS Aries with a lariat when Aries was crotched on the top rope. Aries did a back flip from his position to the floor. It looked awesome. Aries recovered quickly as Nigel went out to get him and gave Nigel a brain buster onto the standing guardrail. Aries went for the 450 but ate Nigel's knees instead. Aries reverses a Nigel submission and gets a big reaction for a false finish. Aries hits a clothesline for another near fall and the fans are really hot for him to win the title. Nigel basically takes off Aries head with a Jawbreaker lariat for the win. Great match and the crowd was really hot throughout. The structure of the match was real solid and it peaked at the right time with lots of near falls and the crowd hot for an Aries win.
They cut to the cameras in the back and show The Age of the Fall brawling with the Briscoes. Then the Hangmen Three and the Vulture Squad jumping in and all four factions brawling with each other.
Verdict:
This was a really good PPV. Hour One was really quick with five matches that were all good and very fast paced. Hour Two was more about the featured matches of Danielson/Morishima, Briscoes/No Remorse Corps and Nigel/Aries.I thought this was a really good two hour show. No complaints from me and Nigel/Aries was a great Main Event.
