Take No Prisoners PPV
Philadelphia, PA 3/16/08
The best wrestling company in North America and the company that breeds World Heavyweight Champions is back with another PPV.
They start with Dave Prazak and Lenny Leonard at ringside and they announce that they are in Philadelphia, the birthplace of Ring of Honor. They show Nigel McGuinness watching the monitor in the back. They announce that the very first match will be a 4-Corners match to decide who will face Nigel for the World Heavyweight Title tonight on PPV.
4 Corners Match for shot at World Title: Claudio Castagnoli vs. Tyler Black vs. Go Shiozaki vs. Delirious
Nigel joins Dave and Lenny in the announce booth during the beginning of the match. Real solid match so far. Tyler Black hits a great spot about 5 minutes in (I've only seen AJ Styles do this previously) where he sends Go into the rope and Go hold onto the ropes. Black goes up for a dropkick but Go has stopped so Black uses his momentum to flip himself fully over and do a flip and land on his feet. Go then comes off the ropes and eats a Tyler Black spinning leg lariat (when I've seen AJ do it he usually throws another drop kick). Great athletic spot. This was a really solid opener and Tyler Black looked really good and picked up this win to gain the title match against Nigel later tonight.
Next they show an ROH video with music by "Ministry" to show the highlights of the last PPV and recent events. They announced Takeshi Morishima has been suspended from PPV due to his attack on Bryce Rensberg. They also announced that the Tag-Team Titles have changed hands twice since the last PPV and are now held by Davey Richards and Rocky Romero.
Jimmy Jacobs and Age of the Fall cut a promo.
Roderick Strong vs. Kevin Steen
This starts out really good with both guys really laying into each other and really emphasizing the stiff style that both guys use. Overall, this was a fun match. Kevin Steen surprisingly got the win over Roderick with a Package Pile Driver. Two upsets so far in the first two matches.
Jimmy Jacobs is shown in the back preaching/talking to a group of people. Jacobs is channeling a cult leader. It's actually pretty decent stuff.
They cut to The Briscoes brawling with the Age of the Fall. Necro Butcher has a shovel.
Philadelphia Street Fight: The Briscoe Brothers vs. Necro Butcher/Joey Matthews
They brawl from the back and are now brawling throughout the building. Mark Briscoe gets a bad cut on his head. Lots of weapons in this match. Lazy and Daizee Haze get involved. Necro Butcher shockingly hits a victory roll at one point in this match. Jay hits a Death Valley Driver through a table propped up in the corner and Mark jumps off the top of the scaffolding and puts Necro Butcher through a table. Jay hits the Jay Driller on Joey Matthews for the win. This was a good fight that probably went a tad longer than it should have but they ended it very well.
The Briscoes cut a short promo from the back and they show Mark's bloody head.
Next up is the "Larry Sweeney Show" starring Larry Sweeney. He's in the ring with Bobby Dempsey. Sweeney says he's going to sign up all the good guys in Ring of Honor and once he gets them over he's going to sell their contracts to Vince for a ton of money. Sweeney brings out the Hangmen 3 and Shane Hagadorn. Pearce announces that they are now part of the Sweet n Sour family. Whitmer and Albright don't seem too excited about it. Erick Stevens comes down to the ring. Stevens tells Sweeney to shut up and says that he challenged Daniel Puder to a match at the last PPV and Stevens says he came out here for a match. Sweeney says he's holding Puder out for a better deal from ROH and Albright sneak attacks Erick Stevens.
Brent Albright vs. Erick Stevens
This is the second match of the night that should be more of a "slugfest" of bigger guys on the roster (first was Strong/Steen). They wrestle a pretty solid match. Stevens gets distracted by Sweeney and eats a Half Nelson suplex for a loss.
They go to Orlando Florida for the next match (they been talking about going there for this match throughout the show):
ROH World Tag-Team Title Match: The No Remorse Corps (Rocky Romero/Davey Richards) vs. The Vulture Squad (Ruckus/Jigsaw)
This is the first time I've seen Jigsaw without his mask. This was really fun and the crowd pretty much ate it up. Highspot of the match was Jigsaw and Ruckus both jumping from opposite turnbuckles and hitting their opponent (who was slumped in the corner) with simultaneous dropkicks. NRC hit a sick spike DR driver for the win. Really fun match, definitely the best match so far and the crowd was red hot for the last half of this match.
They show Nigel and Tyler Black backstage preparing for their match.
Next up they show highlights from Orlando with BJ Whitmer getting attacked by Sweet n Sour Inc and "being rushed to the hospital.".
The next match is announced as one of ROH's biggest rivalries.
Bryan Danielson vs. Austin Aries
This is more of a traditional ROH match versus the rest of the matches on the show. Slow build and they move towards the end to Danielson trapping Aries in a bunch of submission and Aries somehow struggling to get out of each and Aries still coming at Danielson using his and Danielson's signature moves. Really great sequence towards the end where they trade submission moves and then they sprawl and Danielson ends up in a familiar finishing position of his where he is hitting elbows to the head of his downed opponent (ref usually steps in for a stoppage here) but Aries counters with knee strikes and then Danielson counters with more elbow and then does a sick arm wrench and Aries has to tap out. Really good match with a great finishing sequence. The last two matches have been really good.
Age of the Fall and Jimmy Jacobs shown in the back again preaching to their followers.
ROH World Title Match: Nigel McGuinness (c) vs. Tyler Black
Nigel attacks Black before the bell and dominates the majority of the match with Black hitting comeback spots. Black super kicks a chair into Nigel but then eats a chair of his own when he leaps from the top turnbuckle into the crowd after Nigel. Really solid match as Black is getting comeback and hits a big move for a very near fall that has the fans pop and chant "that was 3." Black kicks out of the Tower of London at 2 and the fans pop. It's pretty amazing that Nigel and this match has elevated Tyler into a huge fan favorite for this match. Tyler hits a small package driver for a near 3 that pops the crowd but then misses a Phoenix splash and gets caught in an arm submission. Tyler counters with a roll-up and gets a 2 fall. Fans are really hot for Black to win the belt. Nigel finally, after several near falls, traps Tyler back in that arm submission and get the tap out. Another really good match with a molten hot finish.
Verdict:[/b]
Thumbs Up. I had my doubts with the first half of the show as it was pretty decent but felt a little thrown together and ECW in feel (not that this is a bad thing but it didn't feel PPV-worthy). Business picks up with NRC vs. Vulture Squad tag-title match and then turns into a really good PPV finishing with Danielson/Aries and McGuiness/Black. Watch this PPV for those three matches.
