Matt Sydal, Jimmy Yang & Jack Evans vs. Adam Pearce, Jimmy Jacobs & BJ Whitmer (Trios Tournament 2006 Semi Finals)
HOLY FCUK this was fun. Sydal, Yang and Evans just went to town in this match. Evans hit a sick, sick, sick Sasuke special into a rana- and if you don't know what this is it's where Whitmer is outside the ring and Evans does a handspring and backflips over the ropes BUT instead of doing a body press Evans hits him with a fucking rana. It was flawless. Evans just looked great here as he's started to get much better as a wrestler also (not just as a flyer) due to his Dragon Gate excursions and training. He did a very nice looking suplex combo at one point. This one is a match that you will want to see. Pure Fun.
Jimmy Rave, Alex Shelley & Abyss vs. Tony Mamaluke, Sal Rinauro & Jay Fury (Trios Tournament 2006 Semi Finals)
This couldn't live up to the first match but it was good in it's own way. Mostly because Jimmy Rave, Alex Shelley and Abyss all fucking rule in ROH and they rule more as a team. Rave and Shelley make a fantastic prick combo and Abyss as the monster works out great in this match. Good debut also by Fury even though he looks a little thicker than I remember. His offense looked good but he doesn't seem to have added too much to his arsenal since I first saw him at Wildside- which could be a problem if he ever starts wrestling in non tag-team or multi-man matches. That being said, his moves looked a little crisper than I remember which is a good thing.
Chad Collyer vs Claudio Castagnoli
Solid ten minute match here. Collyer is a solid worker and Claudio is still super over as well as being a very smooth worker. Collyer tries to cheat to win but Ace Steel comes down and stops him and Claudio picks up the win.
Ace Steel vs Sterling James Keenan
I totally forgot that this was the show that really kicked off the CZW run-ins. This was a decent match up until Necro Butcher and Chris Hero started jawing with Ace and then they jumped the guardrail, the locker room emptied and all hell broke loose. They showed some stuff in the back and then cut to Jim Cornette who had been busted open and had a bloody mouth. Chris Daniels tried to see what happened but Cornette said he got blindsided. Cornette then went to the ring, bloody face and all, and cut a great anti-hardcore anti-CZW promo as Adam Pearce, BJ Whitmer and Austin Aries watched on at ringside.
Nigel McGuinness vs. Delirious
Really fun, short post intermission match.
Christopher Daniels vs. Low Ki
This was solid and much better than their recent PPV match (due to not being limited by the cage and being able to take the match to the outside- I also like Gangsta Ki a little better right now than the other Ki because he's less just about the highspots and moves). Solid match with Low-Ki outwrestling Daniels for the win but not beating him so convincingly that their was nowhere to go in terms of a possible re-match.
Post match Daniels offers his hand to Ki after cutting a promo about how things have changed in 4-years. Ki takes the mic and says that things have changed but he will never forget when Daniels disrespected him and refused to shake his hand.
Trios Tournament 2006 Finals: Matt Sydal, Jimmy Yang & Jack Evans vs. Jimmy Rave, Alex Shelley & Abyss
The fun factor for this match was an A+ an this was definitely a match that you wanted to have the rewind button close for. Sydal, Yang and Evans are just such a fun, high-flying team and The Embassy is gold with the interaction between their three members. Abyss looked fantastic in this match as ROH has booked him perfectly in almost all of the matches he has been in- too bad he got a fat head and wanted a higher spot in the company (while being under contract to another company). I would have loved to see Abyss more in this specific role in ROH. Really fun match.
ROH Tag-Team Title Match: Austin Aries/Roderick Strong (c) vs. Bryan Danielson/Jay Lethal
This was a really solid end to a really solid show. Great use of the backstory between Strong/Danielson in this match as they teased it for a while in the beginning and then had it play a major part in the finish with Danielson finally getting tapped by Strong leading Strong to challenge Danielson for their 3rd match in the series. There were some really nice spots done in this match including a series of body slams by Lethal and Danielson were one guy would slam Aries (I think it was Aries) and then the other would tag in and do the same thing and they kept this up for several minutes. Another great spot was Aries and Strong stealing Danielson's signature airplane spin and doing that move on him and then taging out and the other guys would do it to Danielson. Another great spot was where Aries was on the top rope and Lethal pushed him off but Aries landing on his feet, Lethal then tried a body press from the ring to the outside but Aries ducked back into the ring and Lethal landed on his feet, then Aries did an awesome tope suicida thru the bottom and middle rope to just completely destroy both guys and lead to the Danielson/Strong finish. Good stuff.
Post match we get Strong challenging Danielson and calling him a "bitch". We get dissension between Whitmer/Jacobs/Lacey and we get Sydal deciding if he is going to go after the tag-titles for his stable mates Aries and Strong.
Overall Thoughts:
Much much better Trios Tournament that last year. I loved the two matches the Evans, Yang, Sydal team took part in and The Embassy was golden in this tournament. Daniels/Ki was solid and the tag-title match was definitely a strong main event. This is definitely an underrated show that you will want to pick up during a sale.
