Some pre-match back stage promos first. One with Matt Sydal, who is still deciding if he is going to accept AJ Styles' offer to tag-up and take a shot at his stable mates tag-titles and one with The Embassy from Abyss's dungeon. Shelley and Rave have some "dissension" when Rave says he is going to cash in his title shot at Danielson on 2/25 (earned from winning the 2006 Trios Tournament) and Shelley one-ups him by saying he is cashing his in on 2/11.
Adam Pearce vs. Jay Fury
Decent short match, Fury hits a twisting quebrada to the outside early to get the crowd going but Pearce makes short work of him and wins with a splash off the top.
Pearce takes a seat in the ring and Jim Cornette comes out to cut a promo. Promos is interrupted by Necro Butcher who is at ringside with a ticket. Cornette goes off on Necro by telling him he calls himself a butcher but he can't even beat his own meat and telling him that he would have to study all night to pass a piss test. Cornette then challenges Necro to come in the ring and throw down. Pearce grabs the mic and says that Cornette is not a wrestler but he is and tells Necro to come on in and get a piece of the "Scrap Daddy". Pearce then says it's taking Necro too long and goes out and yanks him over the guardrail and they start brawling. Cornette comes in and takes some good shots at Necro and then the locker room empties as the students and Generation Next come down and Necro is taken out in a mob backstage. Some really compelling TV that closes with Cornette and Pearce shaking hands in the ring.
Jay Lethal vs. Jimmy Yang
This was a decent match. Yang continues to impress me in ROH. I was kind of surprised that he went over here considering that going into this match Lethal was in the midst of a push and was #1 in the Top 5. Guess the decision to sign with TNA on his part kind of facilitated his de-push.
Jimmy Rave, Alex Shelley, & Abyss vs. Tony Mamaluke, Sal Rinauro, & Delirious
This was really solid. I absolutely love what the team of Shelley/Rave/Abyss bring in chemistry. Nice "dissension" during the match which causes Rave and Shelley to be simultaneously pinned by Rinauro and Mamaluke for the second straight upset.
Low Ki vs. Jack Evans
This was decent but not quite what I was expecting. Seemed to be some miscommunication and chemistry issues in the beginning. Spot of the match was at the very beginning where Evans was doing an extra spin to showboat for the crowd and Low-Ki just punted him.
Claudio Castagnoli & Ace Steel vs. Nigel McGuinness & Chad Collyer (Anything Goes)
Nigel comes out gets on the mic and says that he knows the guys in this match have beef with each other but that tonight they are going to deliver what the marquee says..."wrestling". He says there will be no punches, no chops, no kicks. Just wrestling, hammer locks, arm locks and if the fans are lucky enough...maybe a headlock or two.
Jim Cornette comes out and tells Nigel that while this sounds like a great idea, the fans here tonight have already seen several great scientific matches and based on what happened earlier (with Necro) the fans want to see some fighting so he makes the match "anything goes".
Pretty decent match overall, lots of brawling in the crowd. Collyer/Ace continue their fued as do Claudio and Nigel when Claudio gains the pinfall over Nigel.
ROH Tag-Team Title Match: Roderick Strong/Austin Aries (c) vs. Jimmy Jacobs/BJ Whitmer w/Lacey
This was a pretty by-the-numbers tag-team match. Not much you haven't seen before but solid work throughout. Story of this match is the beginning of the Jimmy Jacobs story arc where he becomes obsessed with Lacey and it shows here as it costs his team the match when he gets distracted by Lacey and fucks up the Doomsday Rana finisher that he and BJ use. From there Roderick and Aries but together a nice finishing combo and retain the straps.
Christopher Daniels w/Allison Danger vs. Matt Sydal
This was an above average match and really fun to watch. One of the better recent Daniels matches in ROH. Sydal takes advantage of his quickness early and Daniels is really frustrated with Sydal continually getting the upper-hand. Daniels tweaks a knee during this match but it doesn't effect the match too much as they work well around it. Good veteran versus young upstart match with the veteran barely able to hang on for the victory.
ROH Title Match: Bryan Danielson (c) vs. AJ Styles
I liked this alot. A good hard hitting match and a good Main Event that the show built towards. There were a lot of good sequences here that are just too many to get into. One I particularly liked was the AJ Styles dropkick sequence but they strung it out longer than usual here. AJ went for his signature dropkick but Danielson hung onto the ropes, they then went into some matwork before coming back to Danielson eating a dropkick. Really solid match, probably deserving of ****.
Post-match we get two backstage interviews/segments furthering the name of the DVD release "Dissension". First we have Lacey and Whitmer with Lacey trying to place the blame for thier loss on Whitmer instead of Jacobs and then we have Sydal and Aries, with Sydal making the decision to go after the tag-team titles of stable mates Aries and Strong with AJ Styles and Aries not liking it one bit.
Overall Thoughts:
This is a good show. The undercard is solid but unspectacular- although the 6-man was definitely the best undercard match. The last two matches really brought the show home well and Styles/Danielson delievered the Main Event that this show needed. I would definitely recommend picking this DVD up during a sale. It won't be near the top at the end of the year but it's a solid buy.
