Overall a far stronger show than Hell Freezes Over, without the blow away match. Just a top to bottom solid show. Here goes:
1. Matt Sydal & Jimmy Yang & Jack Evans defeated Adam Pearce & Jimmy Jacobs & BJ Whitmer in a semi final match of Trios Tournament 2006
This was REALLY fun. Yang is ROH is awesome and I'm glad to see him in his element. Pearce has really been looking good in ROH so far, and Sydal getting a full time deal was the best move ROH could have made. A lot of spots here, but it doesn't get much more fun than this. Plus Sydal shows he can sell a body part consistantly, unlike AJ at times.
2. Jimmy Rave & Alex Shelley & Abyss defeated Tony Mamaluke & Sal Rinauro & Jay Fury in a semi final match of Trios Tournament 2006
Much slower paced, but still as fun as the first one. Abyss was a good fit for ROH and I'm glad he got over while he was there. Mamaluke is one of the more underrated guys in history and it shows. The Em Bah See did some great tag work and got their heel persona's over as usual. I think Shelley needs to watch so he doesn't do what Rave did and let it effect his ability in the ring, but this was awesome.
3. Claudio Castagnoli defeated Chad Collyer
Maybe my second favorite match of the whole night. I've been a Collyer mark for a long time now and seeing him get a contract and an angle in ROH is perfect. This is what I love about ROH over any other fed I watch....these kind of on track, technical matches that don't need spots or a lot of moves to get over, but still wrestle. Loved it.
4. Ace Steel vs. Sterling James Keenan ended in a no contest when Chris Hero & Necro Butcher entered the ringside area after coming in from the crowd
Keenan looked pretty solid here IMO, certainly better than Steel (whom I still hate). Nothing special here but SJK is worth more looks by ROH. The attack and Corny promo after is great, well done booking by ROH.
5. Nigel McGuinness defeated Delirious in a non title match
Another really fun match. Is Delirious MONEY in ROH or what? Everything he's done, I've loved. And Nigel here is showing how to be a good heel without slowing down your workrate in the ring. Thats something Low Ki, Rave, and even Punk at times in ROH need to study.
6. Low Ki beat Christopher Daniels
The best MOTN here. Nice feeling out process in the beginning, and both men treat this like amateur wrestling because they know each other so well. Then Ki is a bit inconsistant but eventually gets to the ribs/back of Daniels and stays on task, while Daniels sells well and makes a nice comeback with good pop. Good long match, told a nice story, and the ending promo was great.
7. Alex Shelley, Jimmy Rave, & Abyss defeated Jack Evans, Matt Sydal, & Jimmy Yang to win Trios Tournament 2006
This was a bit of overkill for me. Here's where Shelley and Rave do TOO much stalling and taunting and don't wrestle. And Evans really oversold throughout this too. It just went a bit too long and drawn out, expecially fallowing a long Daniels/Ki match.
8. Austin Aries & Roderick Strong beat ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson & Jay Lethal to retain the ROH Tag Titles
Very fun in the beginning, but kinda fizzled out in the end. Too many chops, expecially from people that aren't known for it or have a backstory (Aries). Lethal was a funny heel but it just seemed too long again.
Overall a VERY strong beginning to the show with 2 great trios tags and 2 good technical matches, and a show stealer in Daniels/Ki, but the last 2 matches drug to a close. Good show though.
