Time To Man Up- Long Island, NY 8/4/06
Bryan Danielson vs. Jack Evans
It's weird seeing the champ in the opening match but this worked as both guys are really over so it got the crowd going to start the show plus Jack looks really good in there when he is matched up with a technician like Danielson instead another high flyer.
Christopher Daniels & Matt Sydal vs Irish Airborne
This was the first tag-match for Daniels and Sydal and I liked what I saw. Overall, this was a really solid undercard tag-team match with the Airborne doing their part and putting together some nice offense at times and I thought the team of Daniels and Sydal worked well together and helped freshen up Daniels a little bit in ROH for me.
They are also really building up the World Title challengers between matches so far with backstage promos from Samoa Joe and Nigel McGuinness and also promos leading up to the AJ/Joe match tonight.
Colt Cabana vs. Claudio Castagnoli
Pre-match Cabana gets on the mic and asks Claudio for a clean wrestling match and so we are off. Just a really solid, fun wrestling match that brings a style that you just don't see in mainstream american wrestling. Is there a guy more deserving of being on TV every week than Colt Cabana? I'm still baffled as to how both WWE and TNA have completely missed the boat on this guy.
Austin Aries & Roderick Strong vs. BJ Whitmer & Adam Pearce vs. Homicide & Ricky Reyes vs. Jimmy Rave & Sal Rinuaro (ROH World Tag Team Title Ultimate Endurance Match)
First fall was Scramble rules so it was pretty much non-stop action with lots of dives. Sal Rinauro just gets killed during one stretch as he gets killed by a Roderick backbreaker, a Whitmer exploder, a Reyes dragon sleeper, an Aries brainbuster and a Homicide lariat. Second fall I believe was submission but Pearce gets DQ'd when he and Homicide really get into it (from the aftermath of DBD this year) and Pearce uses a chain on him. So this leaves Aries/Strong vs Reyes/Cide in a regular tag-match for the titles- which of course fits in perfectly with Homicide's quest to win an ROH title before the end of 2006. Solid match-up between the 2 teams as they have a good fast-paced tag-match. Cide is in position to possibly put away Aries but out of nowhere Steve Corino shows up and pops Cide with a roll of quarters and then Aries/Strong hit a powerbomb/dropkick combo for the win.
Next up is a dark match but it is interrupted by Steve Corino. Corino takes the guy in the ring out with a back suplex and a Northern Lights bomb and then gets on the mic and shoots on the crowd. Homicide eventually hits the ring and they brawl for a short period of time before Adam Pearce hits the ring and it's 2 on 1. Whitmer comes down to the ring and there is a standoff before Cide just decks Pearce. Corino and Cide then face off again and brawl to the outside.
Nigel McGuinness vs. Delirious (Pure Title Match)
This was just a good, solid match with good use of in-ring storytelling. Delirious started off getting 2 quick rope breaks because he didn't understand the rules and then picked up a quick third one putting him at a disadvantage. Delirious then gained the advantage and Nigel picked up two quick accidental rope breaks. They then did a false countout finish which made a lot of sense since a lot of Nigel's recent victories had been via the countout rule. Delirious then mounted a comeback before passing out in the Cattle Mutilation.
Jay and Mark Briscoe vs KENTA and Davey Richards
This was a really fun tag-match. All four of these guys are very explosive and it made for some good action. Match really picked up at the end with a flurry of offense including Jay Briscoe's incredible military press into a Death Valley Driver, Davey Richards hitting a sweet DDT, KENTA hitting his flying knee kick, Richards hitting a dive, Richards and KENTA hitting a doomsday device springboard knee, Richards missing an SSP and the Briscoes nailing a springboard spike Jay Driller. Match peaked at the right time and sent the fans home happy. Good stuff.
Samoa Joe vs AJ Styles
This was billed as AJ Styles last match in ROH for a while so right after the handshake AJ took it to Joe and they hit the ground running. Really fun, fast paced, hard hitting match that went about 15 minutes and felt really good for what it was supposed to be. Post match they showed an AJ "tribute video" with a ton of highlights from his ROH matches.
Post-show Briscoes promo might be worth the price of the DVD alone. Joe also has a post-show promo to set up his upcoming title match with Bryan Danielson
Verdict:
Not an elite ROH show but every match did it's part and this was just a really solid show and definitely one to pick up during one of the ROH sales. The last 2 shows just have been extremely well put together from beginning to end with nothing that was not needed or out of place.
