Show starts with Bryan Danielson outside of Madison Square Garden. He talks about the history in MSG. Then he walks down the street and the camera follows him to the front of the Manhattan Center and he talks about his legacy and his match with KENTA tonight.
Davey Richards vs Jack Evans
Short little action-packed opener. A little awkward at times but overall pretty fun.
Nigel cuts a backstage promo about tonight being one of those moments that just kind of stands in time and talks about his GHC title match tonight.
Bruno Sammartino comes down and cuts a promo. Post-match Morishima and Joe get into a huge brawl.
Adam Pearce vs Delirious
Good little match here. Pearce jumps him right when he gets in the ring and they have a good little match. Shane Hagadorn comes down to ringside and just as Delirious is finishing off Pearce, Hagadorn interferes and cheap shots Delirious to allow Pearce the cheap win.
Colt Cabana vs Jimmy Jacobs w/Lacey vs Christopher Daniels
This was really fun and they did a great job of playing up the Jacobs/Cabana/Lacey angle in this match. Lacey has Jacobs work with Cabana but during the match Cabana keeps screwing with Jacobs. Cabana will set up a double team move but then when Jacobs goes to hit the move Cabana will move out of the way and Jacobs will bust his ass. They do this a couple times and build perfectly to the payback spot where Cabana goes for a Flying Butt Butt in the corner on Daniels but Daniels moves out of the way. Jacobs then goes for a spear on Daniels but Daniels again moves out of the way and Jacobs nails Cabana to a huge pop. Great finish comes when Colt is going for the Colt45 on Daniels but Jacobs low blows him and then grabs Colt and hits the Contra Code (Sliced Bread #2) using Daniels as a launching pad and gets the win. Great stuff.
Post-match Lacey berates Jacobs for winning the match.
Jim Cornette is out next with the Briscoes and cuts a long-winded promo on Homicide. I love me some Jim Cornette but he took a little too long here. Cornette tells Cide that if he beat the Briscoes tonight then he gets a shot at the ROH Title at Final Battle.
Jay and Mark Briscoe vs. Homicide and Samoa Joe w/Julius Smokes
Really solid tag-team match here with some great peaks during the match.
ROH Tag-Title Match: Roderick Strong and Austin Aries (c) vs Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli
Another really solid match although I liked this one a little more than the Briscoes vs Joe/Cide match. KOW dominated this match and did a fantastic job separating Austin Aries from his side of the ring and working him over leading to the hot tag to Roderick Strong. Strong was a house of fire and then Aries and Roderick hit back to back dives. It looked like Aries and Strong would retain but Claudio used his briefcase on Aries ribs and shortly thereafter KOW hit a double-team move on Aries to take home the belts.
BJ Whitmer in a leg cast cuts a promo on Jimmy Jacobs. Really solid promo, Whitmer has improved tons in this area.
NOAH GHC Heavyweight Title Match: Naomichi Marufuji (c) vs Nigel McGuinness
Really good match. Starts out kinda slow with both guys doing some limb work and then builds from there. First big spot of the match is Marufuji hitting a Shiranui (Sliced Bread #2) off the apron using the turnbuckles to the floor. After they get back in the ring the action really picks up and the crowd picks up with the action. Crowd was really hot for the near falls from Nigel and he hit some great looking offense. Last 5-10 minutes of this match really take it from a good to a really good match.
ROH Title Match: Bryan Danielson (c) vs KENTA
Great match. The wounded champion versus the foreign star. Good solid work in the opening and middle segments of this match focusing on Danielson's injured shoulder causing him to basically wrestle without the use of his right arm. Much like the Nigel/Marufuji match this one peaked at the right time and both workers brought home the match with a great 5 to 10 minute stretch run down the close of the match. I really liked Marufuji/Nigel but I thought this one out did that match just a bit. This one is definitely one you will want to watch and without a doubt is in my ROH Top 5 matches for 2006 so far.
Verdict:
Just a really good show from top to bottom and they closed out with 2 really solid tag-matches and then 2 matches that I could see legitimately called MOTYC's. Definitely a top show of 2006 for ROH and one you will want to pick up.
