Survival of the Fittest 2006- Cleveland, OH 10/6/06
Briscoes cut a backstage promo and talk about Survival of the Fittest. Jimmy Rave interrupts and asks the Briscoes where Prince Nana and Sal Rinauro are and says that he needs to find Cornette.
Austin Aries is up next talking about SOTF and talks about his finals in 2004 versus Bryan Danielson and 2005 versus Roderick Strong and says that 2006 is the year to get the monkey off of his back and he wins SOTF once and for all.
SOTF Qualifying Match: Davey Richards vs Matt Sydal
Solid wrestling to start. Nice spot where Davey is caught pointing to the ropes and Sydal just grabs and headlock and gives a smirk and then Davey KILLS him with a back suplex. This was decent, a little awkward at times but not bad.
Roderick Strong promos is up next and Roderick talks about his victory in SOTF 2005.
SOTF Qualifying Match: Jimmy Rave w/Daizee Haze vs Delirious
Jimmy is greeted with a ton of toilet paper after he gets into the ring. Another decent match. Not great but certainly not bad.
SOTF Qualifying Match: Austin Aries vs Christopher Daniels
This match was technically solid it just didn't grab my attention. Very bland but that seems to describe a lot of Christopher Daniels 2006 work. At least the right guy won.
Next up is a Bryan Danielson backstage promo about SOTF. Danielson says he put SOTF on the map and that he made Austin Aries in the first SOTF. Danielson says that tonight he is up against Joe and show doesn't deserve another match with him but that even with 2 torn tendons in his shoulder and 1 in his chest he is going to beat Joe tonight.
Midnight Express theme music hits and then moves into the Briscoes theme and it's Jim Cornette with the Briscoe Brothers. Cornette cuts a promo. Says Homicide is a dead man.
SOTF Qualifying Match: Jay and Mark Briscoe vs Homicide and Roderick Strong
This was real solid, just didn't really draw me in. Crowd is really weak so far this show- one of the quietest I can remember at an ROH show. Time starts to run out in the time limit and Cide nails a Tope Con Hilo on Jay which leaves Strong and Cide against Mark until Jay makes the save and leaves it Strong vs Briscoes with one minute remaining in the time limit. Cide back in with a suplex combo. Cornette distracts the ref and the Briscoes use the tennis racket on Cide for the win with about 15 seconds left so both of them advance in the SOTF tournament.
SOTF Qualifying Match: Samoa Joe vs Bryan Danielson
Really solid match. Only 20 minutes due to this being a qualifying match so they tried to ramp it up a little in the last couple of minutes to get a pinfall but to no avail. Both guys are eliminated from the SOTF match due to the draw. Post match Danielson attacks Joe with the championship belt and then heckles the fans who wanted "5 more minutes". Danielson looks into the camera and says that Joe thinks he made the belt but that he (Danielson) is the best Ring of Honor champion of all-time.
Dave Prazak at intermission talks about the SOTF match and Jimmy Rave interrupts him looking for his stable mates and tells Prazak to find him Cornette by the end of the show.
ROH Tag-Team Title Match: Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli) vs Colt Cabana and Jimmy Jacobs w/Lacey
Colt dances with Lacey during the ring intro as Jimmy buries his head in the turnbuckle. Lacey then berates Jimmy in the middle of the ring. KOW theme music hits and they come throw the front door and enter through the crowd instead of from backstage. KOW get the advantage and take apart Jimmy Jacobs and along the way do a great job gloating and playing to the crowd. They build to the hot tag and Cabana comes in and cleans house. Miscommunication from the challengers eventually leads to their downfall. KOW leave through the crowd. Solid match.
Post-match BJ Whitmer hits and the ring and he and Jacobs go toe-to-toe. Cabana gets between them and Jacobs tells everyone to f off and leaves the ring. Lacey stays behind with Colt.
SOTF Elimination Match: Matt Sydal vs Delirious vs Jay Briscoe vs Mark Briscoe vs Austin Aries
Pretty solid first fall. A lot of feeling out and then the Briscoes divide their opponents and conquer when they eliminate Austin Aries with a Springboard Doomsday Device that destroys him. Big elimination as Aries was probably the odds on favorite to win this since he was the runner-up in the last two. The announcers put over the fact that if the Briscoes win this next fall then it's pretty much over for Delirious or Sydal depending on who is left as it would be 2 on 1. Match breaks down into somewhat of a tag-team match between the Briscoes and Sydal/Delirious because of this. Did I mention that I love Jay Briscoe's Military Press into a Death Valley Driver. Yeah, I think I've mentioned that before. Sydal gets hit with one of these but Delirious saves him from the pin (since he doesn't want to get left by himself). The Briscoes then go for the Springboard Doomsday Device on Sydal but Sydal rolls through and get the pin with a cradle on Jay. Mark Briscoe vs Delirious vs Matt Sydal is what we have come down to. Sydal hits the SSP on Mark to eliminate him which brings the finals down to Matt Sydal and Delirious. Sydal hits a crazy moonsault from the top rope to the outside over the guardrail to take out Delirious and gets a huge pop. Lots of back and forth action coming down the home stretch. The announcers put over the idea of Delirious finally trying to beat Sydal in ROH as he hasn't been able to do this yet. Lots of high impact moves and near falls. Delirious goes over in a tightly contested match that drew the biggest consistent crowd heat of the night. Really good ending between Sydal/Delirious.
Post match Delirious and Matt Sydal cut promos. Delirious's of course is in gibberish.
Jimmy Rave ends the show looking for Jim Cornette outside the building trying to find Prince Nana. Cornette says that Prince Nana tried to pull a Power Play and that Cornette doesn't negotiate with Nana and says that Nana is gone until he gets a better attitude or accepts Cornette's terms. Rave is left wondering out loud what is going on.
Verdict:
This was a pretty underwhelming show but the Main Event really picked it up. The Main Event by itself was not great but the finals (Sydal/Delirious) really picked up and the crowd ate it up. While the show was underwhelming it was still a very solid effort from top to bottom. The biggest issues was probably the dead crowd throughout the night and nothing that really stood out until the end of the SOTF finals.
