Jimmy Jacobs starts us off backstage as he cuts a good, long promo about BJ Whitmer and their feud and hypes their match for later tonight.
Jay Briscoe comes out next to a big pop and talks about the injury that his brother sustained yesterday. Says that his brother is in the hospital but he will come back and will be just as crazy as ever. Enter Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal who come out and play heel and demand their tag-title shot. Briscoe says that if they can beat him and his partner then they will get a shot down the road. Daniels and Sydal agree.
Jay Briscoe and Delirious vs Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal
Really solid opener. Was a little longer than I like openers to be but it worked. Kind of surprising finish to the match but you'll have to watch it to find out.
Next we get a BJ Whitmer promo hyping his Steel Cage match tonight with Jimmy Jacobs.
During all of the breaks between matches they are showing highlights of the Jacobs/Whitmer feud and their history together.
Claudio Castagnoli vs. YAMATO
This match was on ROHvideos.com so I'd already seen it. Good stuff for what it was and Claudio looked really good.
Erick Stevens vs. Mitch Franklin
Stevens is a hoss and this is a really fun under 1 minute squash.
Next up is Larry Sweeney, Chris Hero and Jonny Fairplay. They cut a promo (this is the show that got some footage on VH1 for Fairplay) and call out Nigel McGuinness
Chris Hero w/Larry Sweeney and Jonny Fairplay vs Nigel McGuinness
This was a really good mid-card match. Fans were really into it and they built to Fairplay eating a stiff clothesline from McGuinness and then went right to the finish. Crowd popped pretty huge for the finish. Good stuff. Hero and McGuinness are probably my two favorite guys in ROH right now.
Jack Evans & Naruki Doi vs. Rocky Romero & Davey Richards
Before the match starts Roderick Strong comes out with the FIP title and cuts a promo on Jack Evans and Austin Aries. Davey Richards then introduces the new member of the No Remorse Corps and his tag-team partner tonight (Rocky Romero). This was a really fun fast-paced match. Evans looked tremendous in this match as he pulled out some new stuff and really seemed to mesh well as a team with Doi and against Romero/Richards.
Homicide & Colt Cabana vs. Brent Albright & Adam Pearce
This one started out as Cide vs Albright until Pearce put his two-cents in and this brought out Cabana and they had a pretty fun little brawl/match.
BJ Whitmer vs. Jimmy Jacobs (Steel Cage Match)
This was pretty great. I like ROH's chain link cage- much more realistic of what a cage should be like. This one started out decent and got better as the match went along and they had the fans pretty much throughout. Weapons were introduced during different intervals of the match (spike, barbwire bat, table)- I was skeptical about this but it worked. Jacobs pulled off some really sick stuff in this one as he actually licked BJ's bloody forehead at one point in the match and spat his blood back at him. Lots of high impact moves and just some great drama in this one.
Roderick Strong vs. Austin Aries (FIP World Heavyweight Title)
This was really good, especially considering that it had a tough act to follow. Really enjoyed the last five minutes.
Post-match Delirious chases Strong through the crowd.
CIMA, Susumu Yokosuka & Shingo vs. Dragon Kid, Ryo Saito & Masaaki Mochizuki
Really good match but not at the level of last years Dragon Gate 6-man. This was started out a little slower and wasn't as action packed but built nicely into a really hot final 5 minute run.
Verdict:
Overall, this was a great show with Whitmer/Jacobs and the Dragon Gate 6-man being the 2 top matches but everything else flowed pretty well and there didn't seem to be much wasted on this DVD. Pretty good all-around effort by ROH.
