The Battle Of St. Paul- St. Paul, MN 4/27/07
Austin Aries talks us off with a backstage promo about his title shot tonight and compares Morishima to Joe and talks about how he overcame Joe and that he will overcome Morishima tonight. He's more experienced, polished, and refined and he's got the game plan to unseat Morishima tonight and become the first 2 time champion.
Lacey & Rain with Jimmy Jacobs vs. Sara Del Rey & Allison Danger
I'm not a big fan of starting off with a woman's match. Probably because I'm not a big fan of woman's wrestling. That being said, this was solid and the crowd was more involved than I thought they would be. Del Rey and Danger typically are a good team (and they were tonight) and Lacey and Rain were solid and even had matching tights.
Michael Elgin vs. Rhett Titus
Jimmy Rave interrupts the match and they say that he's supposed to be out for 6 more weeks but he makes gets a good pop and makes Rhett Titus tap like a bitch.
Dave Prazak comes out and asks Jimmy what he's doing here. Rave says that staying at home just pisses him off and he's ready to start taking what is his and his is starting with "him" (points at Michael Elgin who is at ringside).
Michael Elgin vs. Jimmy Rave
Rave makes short work of Elgin.
Jimmy Jacobs is backstage and congratulates Lacey on her win and wants to take the time to talk about him and Lacey. Some of the students interrupt and Jacobs starts yelling at them and goes off on them disrespecting Lacey and talking about here like that.
BJ Whitmer vs. Shingo
This was OK. Overkill a little bit with some of the huge bombs being thrown out in match three of the show but the crowd really dug it.
Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Hallowicked & Gran Akuma vs. Mike Quackenbush & Jigsaw vs. Pelle Primeau & Mitch Franklin (ROH Tag Team Title Ultimate Endurance Match)
First fall was OK, Briscoes kill Franklin and Primeau. Second fall was Scramble Rules and was really fun with a great stretch run that continued on for awhile. Second fall only lasts about 4 minutes but was very enjoyable and the CHIKARA guys looked great. Last fall is Jigsaw/Quack vs Briscoes. Jigsaw gets pounded and this leads to a hot tag for Quack and he brings the goodness before falling prey to a Doomsday Device Clothesline. I liked this a lot and the CHIKARA guys looked really good. Real solid debut for Hallowicked, Akuma, Jigsaw and Quack.
Colt Cabana & Homicide vs. Brent Albright & Adam Pearce w/Shane Hagadorn(Anything Goes Match)
This was a fun sprawling brawl. Crowd really digs this match and does a "This Is Awesome" chant after Homicide puts Hagadorn through a table with a dive from the top rope to the floor. Heels went over but crowd quickly forgot when Cide gave Hagadorn a Cop Killa and then they brought Hagadorn back into the ring and Colt gave him a Colt 45. Albright won the fall and they've been putting him over pretty strong as of late with wins over Colt, Homicide and Nigel.
Rebecca Bayless is backstage with the Briscoes and they hype their match against Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley. Briscoes name drop El Generico and Kevin Steen and Claudio.
Rocky Romero vs. Jack Evans vs. Delirious vs. Erick Stevens (Four Corner Survival)
Nice mix here of the faction feud with 1 member of the No Remorse Corps, 1 member of the Resilience, Jack Evans (who has beef with Roderick Strong and the NRC) and Delirious (who has beef with Roderick Strong and the NRC). Overall this was a decent match.
Roderick Strong vs. Christopher Daniels (FIP World Title Match)
This was solid but in typically recent Chris Daniels style it really didn't do much for me. Just haven't been able to get into anything he's done in the last couple of years unless he's tagging with Sydal.
Jimmy Jacobs is backstage again. This time it's Adam Pearce, Shane Hagadorn and Brent Albright that interrupt. Hagadorn makes a crass statement and Jacobs goes off. Pearce then cuts a promo about Cabana and his farewell tour and their upcoming match.
Takeshi Morishima vs. Austin Aries (ROH World Title Match)
This one started out really hot with Aries trying to take it right to Morishima and get him off his feet but try as he might Morishima would not go down. This led to Morishima on the offensive and controlling the match and slowing it down. This leads to Aries hitting his missile dive between the middle and bottom rope and then hitting some dropkicks to Morishima on the outside. They go back and forth with Aries getting in good shots but Morishima always seeming to come back out on top. They do the Aries combo with the kick to the head, brainbuster and then the 450 that he used to beat Joe but Morishima got his foot on the rope! Morishima takes over after this and overcomes the challenger. Really good match. Not at the level of Morishima vs Nigel, but maybe the second best defense so far for the big man.
Post match Rebecca Bayless is backstage again with Jimmy Jacobs. This time Roderick Strong and Rocky Romero interrupt. Jacobs says he's sick of the locker room and of the disrespect that they give him and Lacey. Roddy and Rocky then cut a promo. Roddy puts over his FIP title
Verdict:
This was a good, solid show but really nothing to go out of your way to see. I really liked Morishima/Aries, the 4-team tag was really fun and everything else was solid.
