A Fight At The Roxbury- Boston, MA 6/8/07
Rebecca Bayless is backstage with the No Remorse Corps. Roderick cuts a promo on Delirious. Says the lucky one is Austin Aries since he gets to hide behind the contract and he is running from them. Says that there is nothing to hide from for Stevens, Cross and Delirious. Davey steps up and says that they are the measuring stick and says that they will end this tonight.
Bryan Danielson is backstage and says he has a lot of respect for Jimmy Rave but he's bothered that Jimmy lasted more than 20 minutes with him last year. Says that tonight it will be short and simple on Danielson's path to regaining the ROH heavyweight championship.
Brent Albright vs. BJ Whitmer
They work the match to both guys strengths early on so a lot of brawling and out of the ring action. Overall this was pretty decent and the fans seemed to enjoy it. Whitmer grows increasingly upset during the match and ends up head butting the ref and then going crazy at ringside throwing chairs and tables and then leaving the ring side area. Interesting way to open the show...
Daizee Haze's music hits and comes down and cuts a promo. She talks about various things including Lacey which leads to Jimmy Jacobs coming out with his cane. Jimmy says he doesn't want any trouble but he ends up eating a Daizee Haze forearm and then she attacks him with his cane which leads to Lacey coming down and she nails Daizee with a lungblower and then she goes to check on Jimmy. But Jimmy tells her to go get Lacey. Kind of interesting how they did the role reversal here as it use to be Lacey directing Jimmy back to his opponent. Jacobs finally pulls Lacey off and he tells Daizee that things are about love now but that after tonight tomorrow in Philly will be about violence.
Bryan Danielson vs. Jimmy Rave
Both these guys have great theme music. "It's the Final Countdown!". This was pretty great. Dragon pulls out a tremendous new spot where he fakes a dive to the outside and then hits a flying forearm off the apron. Some good back and forths in this match. Danielson is really bringing the good and Rave is hanging with him. Finish pretty much comes out of nowhere but it was consistent with Danielson matches and what Danielson said he would accomplish in the pre-match promo. This was real good, especially for an under card match. Danielson is REALLY on his game right now.
Mark Briscoe vs. Kevin Steen
I never thought I would say this but I'm digging Kevin Steen in ROH and I'm interested to see how this match goes. They go right at it immediately when Mark hits the ring- definitely the right thing to do as these two tend to be better at wrestling a faster pace. Mark hits a dive to the outside over the top about a minute and a half into the match and then hits a flipping senton off the second turnbuckle to the outside onto Steen. Briscoes tries another high risk move but Steen catches him and powerbombs him into the ring apron and then picks him up and powerbomb him over the guardrail! Awesome move. Next they brawl into the crowd and into the bleachers. Steen climbs up one of the light towers and the crowd buzzes but he comes down and kicks Mark and taunts the crowd instead. Mark gets the upperhand and hits a standing moonsault on the outside of the ring and then they get back in the ring and he hits a double stomp. Real good stuff so far. Steen counters with a pumphandle move where Mark's neck is broken over Steen's knee. Lots of back and forth moves between the two grapplers. Briscoes goes up top for the SSP but Steen gets to his feet and throws Briscoes off the top through a table at ringside. Crazy spot. Steen then brings Mark in the ring and hits a Package Piledriver and shockingly pills Mark 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring. Good stuff. Post match Steen gets into the camera and asks his mom if she saw what he did. Says he won and that he is a winner. Steen then grabs a chair and looks to inflict more damage but Jay Briscoe comes down and runs him off. El Generico shows up and hold Steen back from re-entering the ring.
Nigel McGuinness vs. Claudio Castagnoli vs. Chris Hero w/Sweet n Sour Inc vs. Mike Quackenbush
Quack and Nigel have some nice back and forths with neither guy getting the upper hand but Hero comes in out of nowhere, and looks to be a bit jealous, and just nails Quack. Shortly thereafter Hero and Quack do a really nice lucha sequence in which Quack gets the upperhand and Hero is sent sprawling to the floor after he tags in Claudio. Quack is on fire early and is looking really great with all 3 guys. This one kind of breaks down into Claudio and Hero ganging up on Quack which leads to a hot tag for Nigel. Really solid match. Great sequence towards the end where Nigel is on a run and goes for a rebound lariat but Tank Toland and Bobby Dempsey grab him and drag him outside and throw him into the guardrail taking him out. The ref looks outside but all he sees is Toland and Dempsey doing squats. Back in the ring and Hero eats a bicycle kick from Claudio and then Quack comes in and does a great multi-rotation armbreaker take down into a roll-up but only gets two. Claudio then kills Quack with an uppercut for the win as Nigel desperately tries to dive in to break up the count. Really good 4-way with everyone looking top notch and on their game.
This has been a really good undercard so far.
Rebecca Bayless is backstage at intermission with BJ Whitmer. She wants to know what is going on and he says he doesn't want to talk about it. So instead Kevin Steen and El Generico take the mic and Steen talks about Generico's upcoming match with Matt Sydal tonight and talks about his match with Mark Briscoe. Steen asks Mark if he enjoyed the match and getting dropped on his head. Steen said that he enjoyed it, he enjoyed it so much that he can't wait until he steals the DVD from the merch table and watches it over and over and over and over again. Says he's gonna use the DVD like it was pornography and then he's gonna drop him on his head again but this time for the tag-team titles.
Eddie Edwards vs. Pelle Primeau
This was a good back from intermission match. I like Edwards, I wouldn't mind seeing him get a semi-permanent roster spot- he has looked good in tags with Jason Blade and he looked good here.
Matt Sydal vs. El Generico
This was fun. A couple of really nice spots including Generico diving from the outside through the corner turnbuckles to the other side of the outside of the ring and hitting Sydal with a tornado DDT- it's the kind of move that you probably have to visual see to understand.
Delirious, Matt Cross, & Erick Stevens vs. Roderick Strong, Davey Richards, & Rocky Romero (Six Man Tag Team War)
Delirious, Stevens and Cross hit the ring and this one gets started quickly. This was overall a pretty decent match but didn't really feel like a semi-Main Event.
Next up is Larry Sweeney, Super Agent! He is in a private athletic facility and Chris Hero is behind him working out. Tank Toland and Bobby Dempsey are in the house! Tank turns the "flab into fab"! Tank says it's time for Bobby to do a gut check and tells him to do 5 squats. Hero joins in and jumps on Bobby's shoulders and they have Bobby run with Hero on his shoulder but he falls down. Then they have Bobby running laps with Hero running backward to encourage him. Great stuff.
Takeshi Morishima vs. Jay Briscoe (ROH World Title Match)
Morishima attacks before the bell and they go right at it outside of the ring. Jay grabs the advantage pretty quickly and attempts a dive from the ring but he crashes and burns. Pretty stiff match to start, Morishima gains the advantage and slows things down a little. Jay makes a brief comeback but Morishima over powers him with strikes. Jay makes a comeback by hitting a Death Valley Driver on Morishima and then a big splash from the top for a near fall but Morishima kicks out. Jay hits a superplex as he catches Morishima up top but Morishima kicks out and hulks up and flips Jay with a vicious clothesline and then nails him with a Backdrop Driver for the pin. Good solid Main Event.
Post-match Kevin Steen hits the ring and attacks Jay Briscoe which brings out Mark which brings out El Generico. They brawl into the crowd and backstage.
Brent Albright cuts a promo calling himself the "Gun for Hire". Says people can come to him and he will get the job done for the right price.
Verdict:
Great undercard on this show. The opener wasn't great but Danielson/Rave, Mark/Steen and the 4-way were all really good. Post intermission stuff was solid. Overall a good show.
