United We Stand- Dayton, OH 6/22/07
Rebecca Bayless is backstage and hypes up tonights Main Event and looks for the Briscoes but instead finds Tank Toland who is overseeing Bobby Dempsey who is doing squats. Toland shoos her away as they are training. Next, she runs into Jimmy Jacobs and Lacey but Jacobs just blows smoke at her. Finally, she tracks down the Briscoes and talks to them about their 2/3 falls match with Claudio and Sydal. Briscoes say winning in 2 straight, like they did last time against KOW, isn't luck it's skill and tell their opponents to "Man Up" tonight.
Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. Irish Airborne
Love the "Ole" Generico theme music. It gets the blood pumping. I still can't believe that Steen and Generico are one of the things that I look forward to most on ROH DVDs now. Generico's entrance is just "fun". This turned out to be OK, not at the level of the last few Steen/Generico matches but a decent opener to the show.
BJ Whitmer is backstage and cuts a promo. Says he was fined last week due to an incompetent referree. Says tonight it's he and Brent Albright in a no-DQ match. Tonight we not only find out how much a man can mentally take but also how much a man can physically take.
Jimmy Rave vs. Pelle Primeau vs. Delirious vs. Adam Pearce vs. Chris Hero (Gauntlet Match)
Rave and Pelle start us off and they do some pretty decent stuff. Rave wins via tapout after Pelle had him on the ropes for a bit. Delirious's music hits! Delirious vs Rave up now. Delirious hits 6 clotheslines and then a Bizarro Driver and SQUASHES Jimmy Rave! Shocking! Adam Pearce is out next, so it's Adam Pearce vs Delirious. Shane Hagadorn with arm in a sling is out with Pearce. Delirious and Pearce do a solid 5 minutes before Delirious takes it home. Sweet and Sour Inc is in tow with Hero (Larry Sweeney, Tank Toland and Bobby Dempsey). Toland makes Dempsey do squats on the way to the ring. Hero stalls and Delirious gets things started by doing a dive off the top onto Sweeney and Dempsey while Hero is under the ring. Hero finally shows back up with a springboard double axe handle while Delirious is facing the other way. Hero then does a ton of awesome taunts and starts a beatdown. Hero eventually takes it home after about 5 minutes. Decent stuff. Overall, a decent gauntlet.
Brent Albright vs. BJ Whitmer- (No DQ)
Whitmer doesn't wait for the bell to ring and they immediately go toe to toe. They don't waste much time and they are out in the crowd brawling. Albright brings a letter strap into play. This match was just kind of there. It didn't really draw me in. Albright has been kind of hit and miss in ROH and Whitmer right now is definitely in a rut so not the best match-up from my perspective right now.
Post match Whitmer attacks the refs and gives on of the students an Exploder.
Nigel and Danielson are backstage and as talking about why they are teaming with each other tonight- both are out for a shot at the World Title.
Roderick Strong & Davey Richards vs. Matt Cross & Erick Stevens
This one starts out real hot with Cross and Stevens getting the advantage and Cross doing his nifty fake dive and Stevens delivering the goods on Richards directly after the fake. NRC eventually takes the lead in the match and works over Cross. This leads to the hot tag to Stevens and the "CHOO CHOO!". They do some pretty good spots after this and finish the match hot. Pretty decent mid-card match that was typical of the NRC tags.
Post-match Roderick Strong tells Stevens and Cross that this is like the 40th time that they've beaten them up. Asks them if they are gonna run and hide like their former leader. Austin Aries is in the crowd! Roderick tells him to run and hide behind his contract. Fans chant "Austin Aries". Aries tells him to meet him outside where they don't have to worry about a contract but Roderick takes off to the locker room.
Rebecca Bayless is backstage with Sweet and Sour Inc. Larry Sweeney takes the mic and says he has some great news. Says that Chris Hero has officially signed his contract with Ring of Honor. Hero says that the holdout is over and the number one athlete in ROH has finally signed. Puts himself over as the winner of the gauntlet. They do a "Chris is Awesome" chant. Sweeney then takes the mic and puts himself over. They make Bobby do jumping jacks to end the segment.
Lacey w/Jimmy Jacobs vs. Serena Deeb
Decent match. Jacobs smokes a cigarette during the match and blows the smoke into Serena's face at one point. Serena's not too bad to look at and we all know about Lacey. Rain (Lacey's partner) comes down and distracts Serena at the end and Lacey wins it with an implant DDT. Post-match Rain and Lacey attempt a beatdown which brings in Daizee Haze and she gets rid of the heels.
KENTA vs. Rocky Romero
Pretty solid by the numbers match. Good effort by both guys but nothing that really jumped out at me. They did a pretty nice stretch run and the crowd digs it so it works.
Post-match Davey Richards comes down and stands over Rocky Romero and KENTA. He extends his hand to KENTA and they act all friendly but Davey eventually turns on him and he and Rocky attack until Delirious, Stevens and Cross come down for the save.
Bryan Danielson & Nigel McGuinness vs. ROH World Champion Takeshi Morishima & Naomichi Marufuji
This match starts out really solid with some real nice interactions in the ring between Morishima and Nigel and out of ring interactions with Morishima and Danielson standing out. Overall, just a real solid match throughout. Great spot towards the end as Morishima is going up top and Danielson stops him and tries for a superplex but gets pushed off. Danielson gets caught in the tree of woe and very naturally Marufuji does a springboard from the other side of the ring and nails Danielson with a dropkick as he's upside. Looked real good and had great timing which made it come off all the better. Nigel then grabbed Morishima and hit a Tower of London but only got 2. They did a nice closing sequence also as Nigel got nailed with a Marufuji superkick (who they got taken out by Danielson) but Nigel bounced back against the ropes and hit a rebound lariot on Morishima for the surprise 3 count. "ROH" chant follows the match as Morishima takes his first loss as champ. Really good match.
Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Claudio Castagnoli & Matt Sydal (ROH World Tag Team Title Match- 2/3 Falls)
This is the re-match from their really good match at the "Respect is Earned" PPV. Start of this match is real nice. Claudio starts off but when Sydal gets the tag he looks really good and business picks up for a couple of minutes. Good action packed start for the match. Really just too much action to even try in this match. Claudio tries to powerbomb one one of the Briscoes to the outside but instead both guys tumble to the floor. Sydal goes into motion for a dive to the outside but Jay gets in the ring and does his AWESOME military press into a Death Valley Driver instead and then Mark goes up top and hits a moonsault to secure the first fall in pretty quick (under 10 minutes) fashion. The announcers put over that this is 5 falls in a row in 2/3 falls matches for the Briscoes. Second fall is real solid but not quite as great as the first fall. Overall, a really good match and Main Event to end the show. Everyone looked really good.
Post-Match Brent Albright is backstage and cuts a promo about Morishima. Says that Nigel showed tonight that Morishima could be beaten but Albright will be the guy that does it when it counts.
Verdict;
This one definitely felt like the first half of a doubleshot in that it was a good solid show but not one of the better ones of the year. The show closed really strong with 2 very good tag-team matches. Undercard was OK, but felt a little weaker than usual.
