Death Before Dishonor V Night 1- Boston, MA 8/10/07
We open up with The Briscoes backstage and they cut a promo about their Street Fight tonight with Kevin Steen and El Generico.
Davey Richards vs. Jack Evans
Davey attacks Jack Evans as he is doing his pre-match breakdance routine and we are off. This was a good opener with a good flow. Crowd was pretty hot throughout. It went a little long and when Jack was about to finish off Davey, Roderick Strong interfered with Rocky Romero and beatdown Jack until Austin Aries, Matt Cross and Erick Stevens hit the ring and ran off the heel. On his way out Jack Evans says he is sick of the No Remorse Corps BS and is going to get some people to have his back.
Lacey vs. Daizee Haze (Winner Received SHIMMER Title Match)
This was pretty good. I'm not a big fan of women's wrestling but the ROH/Shimmer women can really bring it.
Nigel McGuinness vs. Chris Hero (Pure Wrestling Rules)
Pre-Match Larry Sweeney cuts a promo and announces some "Pure Wrestling Commandments". This is the first "Pure Wrestling Rules" match since the Pure Title was unified last year. Shortly after they start wrestling the lights go out and someone gets on the mic and says "Project 161 is coming". Hero talks to the announcer and the announcer announces "Chris Hero would like to inform the referee that during the blackout Nigel McGuinness used all three of his rope breaks". The "Project 161" stuff was short and came off flat but the Hero announcement was hilarious. Hero and Sweet and Sour Inc continue to be one of the most entertaining parts of ROH. They start to get going and Tank Toland interferes putting Nigel's foot over the ropes to break a hold and the ref takes a rope break away from Nigel. A little later Hero baits Nigel into using a closed fist and Nigel uses his second rope break. After about 5 more minutes Nigel uses his third rope break and the Pure Wrestling veteran is down 3 rope breaks to none. Chris Hero then quickly makes Nigel tap out when he gets to the ropes but cannot break the hold due to being out of rope breaks. Overall, this was a really entertaining match that left a lot on the table. Post-match Nigel nails Bobby Dempsey with a rebound lariat.
Kevin Steen and El Generico are backstage and Generico is lacing Steen's boots. Steen cuts a promo about their Street Fight with the Brisoces tonight.
Delirious vs. Brent Albright vs. Matt Cross vs. Pelle Primeau vs. Eddie Edwards vs. Jigsaw (Six Man Mayhem)
This was pretty fun. Pretty much a typical Six Man Mayhem match.
Austin Aries & Erick Stevens vs. Roderick Strong & Rocky Romero
This was pretty solid. They worked the early part of the match well with Aries getting double teamed and leading up to a hot tag to ES. ES gets in some nice shots but then also gets overwhelmed and the No Remorse Corps continue on the advantage. Which leads to Aries getting a hot tag and he gets in some shots on Roderick and then it quickly breaks down to all four guys in the ring. This ended up being a good, solid mid-card tag match.
Post-Match Davey Richards hits the ring and the No Remorse Corps start a beatdown. Matt Cross hits the ring but Roderick beats him down. Jack Evans hits the ring and exacts some revenge on the NRC and clears the ring.
Shane Hagadorn is backstage and is gushing about Adam Pearce.
Bryan Danielson vs. Matt Sydal
Pre-match Larry Sweeney gets on the mic and says he and Danielson have some unfinished business- says 2 weeks ago that he hasn't seen any of the $10,000 from the tag challenge. Danielson says that he will give Sydal the money if Danielson beats him tonight, if not then Danielson will keep both of their shares.
This was really solid. It was your typical Bryan Danielson match. So if you like that (and I'm not sure how you can't) then you will like this.
Takeshi Morishima vs. Claudio Castagnoli (ROH World Title Match)
This was really good- definitely one of Morishima's best title defenses (if not the best). Claudio has been looking really good lately and this was no different. Crowd popped huge for a near fall when Claudio hit Morishima with the Ricola Bomb. Just a good, good match.
Brent Albright is backstage and cuts a promo about his title match versus Morishima tomorrow night.
Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico (Boston Street Fight/Non-Title)
They start fighting during the Briscoes ring entrance and almost immediately Generico is eating the guardrail and then throwing a chair at one of the Briscoes while the other Briscoe and Steen go toe to toe. The announcers say good bye and say they are going to let the action speak for itself so the audio is just fan reactions (which is pretty cool with the right matches). Not too far in Steen hits a powerbomb on the outside that puts Mark through a table and then eats a chairshot from Jay. This one is a wild brawl in the crowd at this point. Crowd is really into this match. Tons of chairs and moves through chairs in this match. Mark eats a brainbuster onto a chair and then Steen takes a bump to the floor and goes through a table. Jay is busted open at this point. The Briscoes hit a Razor's Edge into a neckbreaker off the top. Steen pulls the ref out and Mark does a dive over the top to the outside to take out Steen. Briscoes hit their SpringBoard Doomsday Device but somehow Steen recovers to break up the pin. Steen breaks out a big ladder and sets it up in the corner but he takes a backdrop into it denting it up pretty good. Mark goes up the ladder but instead takes an ace cutter off the ladder from Generico. Jay bashes Steen in the head with the tip of the ladder. Steen reverses a Jay Driller into a Package Piledriver onto the ladder and gets the win for his team! This was really fun. Tons of brawling, chairs and big moves and the fans ate it up.
Post-Match Kevin Steen gets on the mic and says this match was a clear indication of the future and that they will take the belts in the Steel Cage in Hartford.
Verdict:
This was a real solid show. It had a decent to good undercard and the two matches on top (Morishima/Claudio and Briscoes/Steenerico) really delivered.
