Death Before Dishonor V Night 2- Philadelphia PA 8/11/07
The Briscoes start off the show and cut a brief promo talking about their singles matches tonight against Kevin Steen and El Generico and say that they don't care who is first but to get their ass to the ring. Fans chant "Man Up...Man Up". Steen and Generico come out and Steen cuts a promo about how they've kicked the Briscoes ass. Steen tells the Briscoes that they don't have to be called out because there is nothing that they like more than beating up on the rednecks. Steen says he would like to have the first match but he promised his mother he would call her so El Generico vs Mark Briscoe will start us off.
Mark Briscoe vs. El Generico (Falls Count Anywhere)
They start by brawling in the aisles. Steen and Jay brawl backstage and Mark and Generico mix it up outside the ring. Mark hits a Shooting Star Press to the floor from the top rope about 1 minute into the match. About 6 minutes in Generico hits Mark with a Belly to Back suplex off the apron to the floor. Steen comes out with a ladder but gets taken out but this allows Generico to hit his move where he flies through the ropes from one side of the ring to the other and nail Mark with a DDT on the floor and pick up the win. Jay comes out but he gets taken out by Steen and Steen and Generico celebrate with the ladder.
No Remorse Corps are backstage and talking about their match and what they are doing afterwards. Outcomes Larry Sweeney and Matt Sydal is announced as the 4th member of their team for their 8-Man Street Fight Tonight against Austin Aries, Delirious, Erick Stevens and Matt Cross.
Jack Evans vs. Deranged
They do a pre-match dance off but it's interrupted by some random guy jumping the barricade and talking about "Project 161" with a megaphone. He's quickly dealt with and the match is on in the ring. This match had it's moments with a couple of fun spots but overall was just kind of there.
Nigel McGuinness & Claudio Castagnoli vs. Chris Hero & Jigsaw
Hero's showboating is just tremendous. Hero spends a lot of the beginning stages of this match avoiding Claudio. Holy crap moment of this match came when Jigsaw ducked out of the ring and Claudio reached over the top rope and grabbed his head with both hands and physically pulled him into the ring in one motion. And then gave him a huge uppercut. While it wasn't really a highspot it was an amazing visual that I've never seen done before. Claudio finally gets his shot at Hero and it breaks down from there as Nigel and Claudio seize control of the match but ultimately Hero cheats to gain a victory over Claudio and then uses Claudio's "Top of the Class" Trophy to inflict more pain and embarrassment on Claudio until Nigel finally gets back in the ring to help him out. Overall, this was a fun/strong mid-card tag-match.
Bryan Danielson is in the back and talks about Mike Quackenbush. Says he has a lot of respect for him and everything he's done in wrestling but says that now he is the veteran and the best wrestler in the world and tonight Quack will be just another stepping stone on his quest for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Sara Del Rey vs. Lacey (SHIMMER Title Match)
Daizee Haze is shown watching this from the entrance ramp. This looked pretty good but to be honest it's women's wrestling and I just wasn't that into it when I was watching it. Both women really put forth great effort and seemed to hit all their moves really well. If you are a women's wrestling fan that I think you would probably enjoy this.
Brent Albright is backstage and cuts a promo about his World Title tonight with Takeshi Morishima.
Bryan Danielson vs. Mike Quackenbush
It's the FINAL COUNTDOWN! FINAL COUNTDOWN! This one started off kinda slow but got fun quickly when Quack got all arm draggy. Danielson responded by bringing the aggressive strikes and offense to the match. Quack brings it back and they briefly go toe to toe before Danielson regains control. Danielson controls the midsection and gets kind of cocky. Quack takes offense and hits some nice strikes and keeps reversing Danielson's reversal attempts. Quack hits a nice dive over the top and takes out Danielson and himself. Quack goes for a submission. But this just seems to piss off Danielson and he tries to come back but Quack grabs another submission- trying to take out Danielson's shoulder. Danielson comes back with a flurry of moves including a Dragon Suplex w/bridge and then clamps in the Cross Faced Chicken Wing. Quack gets out and they trade pinfalls but Danielson then grabs the Cattle Mutiliation and then turns it into a pinfall for a 2 count. Quack comes right back and hits an inverted DDT type move and then hits double knees from the top for a near fall. Quack locks in the stretch plum and then a Cross Armbreaker! Quack then grabs a really close near fall on a small package. Danielson comes back with the triangle choke and then hits his elbows to Quack's head and the ref has to call for the bell. Really strong match. Not an epic MOTYC but just a really solid match that was well wrestled by both guys.
Bill Apter is backstage! He's interviewing Austin Aries. Aries cuts a promo about his match tonight against the No Remorse Corps. Delirious is with The Resilience and cuts a passionate gibberish promo.
Jay Briscoe vs. Kevin Steen (Lights Out Match)
Jay Briscoe says to cut the music and tells Steen to "bring your fat ass out here and let's do this!". Steen comes running down and they are toe-to-toe and the crowd is into. Steen does a leap over the top and takes out Jay outside the ring. This is a fun fast-paced match and the crowd is really into it. The Generico/Steen vs Briscoes feud is really over with the fans. The Stretch Plum is used for the second straight match- not that their is anything wrong with that- you just don't see it too much. Steen hits a sick running powerbomb into the guardrail on Jay that gets a "Holy sh*t" chant from the crowd. Jay somehow comes back later with a Death Valley Driver onto the ring apron. Generico gets involved and then Steen hits a package piledriver after two big boots from Generico. Fans chant "Man Up" at Briscoe and he just can't get up by the 10 count as he's at his knees at nine. Steen and Generico beat the Briscoes this weekend and the announcers hype their upcoming Cage Match for the belts. Mark comes down with a chair to clear the ring and ensure that they do not inflict further damage on his brother.
Takeshi Morishima vs. Brent Albright (ROH World Title Match)
This was OK. Nowhere near the Claudio/Morishima night from the night before but that's because Albright is not Claudio. Fans really got into the end of the match and popped huge for an Albright near fall. Even chanting "That was 3" at a near fall. Albright gets a post match chant in appreciation from the fans. Overall, I'd say this was better than it should have been and props to both guys for really getting the fans to buy into the match.
Next up is a FIP hype commercial.
Austin Aries, Delirious, Erick Stevens, & Matt Cross vs. Roderick Strong, Rocky Romero, Davey Richards, & Matt Sydal (Philly Street Fight)
"For a few seconds this place was Armageddon." Roderick Strong calls to cut the music when Delirious and The Resilience comes out with only 3 members (no Austin Aries). Roderick says they took Aries out last night and says he went home and is probably in TNA trying to get his job back. Says they can turn around or get their ass handed to them. Aries attacks from beyond with some type of weapon and all 8 guys are in the ring and fighting. This starts out as a sprawling brawl. Cross and Sydal fighting on top of the bleachers. Sydal gets thrown off the bleachers on top of the other guys who are brawling below. Cross then does a sick move where he runs the bleachers (which are probably about 10 feet above the ground) and jumps sideways off the way and does a senton lips to take out one of the guys on the other team- this got a huge pop from the crowd and was a great visual. About 10 minutes in and Cross and Sydal are fighting in the ring (this is the first time anyone has been back in the ring since the beginning of the match). Action kind of picks up in the ring as there is a lot of back and forth between the two teams. Stevens takes some vicious chair shots from Roderick that gets a big pop from the crowd. Aries hits the Stroke on Roderick on to a ladder and then goes to the top for a 450 but gets taken out. Roderick then hits some chairshots on Aries leg. Stevens is the first guy noticeably busted open (about 20 minutes in) due to previous chairshots. They focus a pretty large segment on Stevens battling Roderick and Davey in the ring and the announcers are really putting him over. Stevens powerslams Roderick from the ring apron through a table (Davey Boy Smith type powerslam). Strong and Stevens continue to be the focus of the in-ring action as the other guys fight in the crowd or backstage. Stevens finally hits a move that the announcers call a "half-nelson backbreaker through a ladder" but it looks like more of just a half-nelson slam- although it looked like it hurt a lot. Roderick then makes Stevens tap to the StrongHold as Aries tries to come in for the save but is late. Fans chant "ROH" post match. This was really solid and I liked the Stevens/Roderick stuff a lot. Post-Match fans chant "Erick Stevens...Erick Stevens" as he starts to come to his feet.
Verdict:
This was a good show but not great. The Main Event was solid. Danielson/Quack was real good, and the Briscoes/Steen/Generico stuff continues to be consistently good.
