Motor City Madness 2007- Detroit, MI 9/14/07 (DVD)
Davey Richards vs. Silas Young
Silas Young had some kick ass music like Air Supply or Night Ranger or something. So he was over before he even came through the curtain. This was a surprisingly good opening contest as it went back and forth and Young more than held his own with the ROH Veteran Davey Richards. Silas reminded me a little of Jerry Lynn in his in-ring style and a little in his look (although he's put together a little better than Lynn). I would definitely approve of seeing more of Silas Young in ROH as he's kind of in that Eddie Edwards group of guys that I think could break out if given an opportunity.
The Briscoes cut a promo about random stuff.
Chasyn Rance & Kenny King vs. Mitch Franklin & Alex Payne
This is the debut of "Young, Rich and Ready for action" and they do pretty well. Kenny King especially looks really good and they hit some good tandem moves. Post-Match Chasyn Rance gets on the mic and shoots off at the mouth which leads to Bryan Danielson's theme music hitting and he comes out with an eye patch. Danielson says that he is a match tomorrow night for the World Title and needs to test his depth perception and see if he can wrestle with his eye like it is. He challenges one of YRR since they are "ready for action".
Bryan Danielson vs. Kenny King
This was a pretty basic Main Eventer versus lower mid-carder match. King held his own but this was definitely Danielson's match and he got the majority of the offense. Chasyn Rance interfered during the match which shortly after the match ended led to....
Bryan Danielson vs. Chasyn Rance
This one only lasted about 3 moves and Rance was done in pretty quickly.
Overall the YRR stuff was pretty decent. I thought that they got over pretty well at the end of their tag-match and I'm a fan of having a difference between your top flight workers (Danielson) and the rest of your roster so even though this kind of on the surface hurts the debut of YRR it puts them at a place on the card where they can grow and obviously shows that Danielson is clearly on a level of his own going into his World Title Match the next night. That being said, I would be interested in seeing more Kenny King in ROH as I thought that he had a real good showing in the tag-match.
Delirious vs. Roderick Strong vs. Erick Stevens vs. Kevin Steen (Four Corner Survival- Winners Gets An ROH Title Match)
This was a fun match. Instead of a typical Four Corner Survival this was pretty much a free-for-all. Stevens/Strong had some real good stuff together.
Chris Hero vs. Jimmy Jacobs
Sweeney's faction was in full effect in this match with Tank Toland, Sara del Rey and Bobby Dempsey all at ringside. This was a pretty good mid-card match. It dragged a little bit but Chris Hero's antics more than made up for it. Jimmy looked pretty good here, he looked a little apprehensive with his knee early but once he got going it wasn't something that I noticed. Lots of hijinks late in this match that led to Jacobs getting the win.
Post-Match Rebecca Bayless interviews Jimmy Jacobs and he says his match went well and for everyone to wait for what is next.
Naomichi Marufuji vs. El Generico
This was OK, but was way longer than it needed to be. I think this was the type of match that comes off better "live" then on "DVD".
Nigel McGuinness & Claudio Castagnoli vs. Brent Albright & BJ Whitmer
Albright and Whitmer are two guys that just don't do anything for me. I guess it's a good thing for me that they've been put as a team so that know they are only on one segment per show instead of two. This was a decent tag-match. Whitmer and Albright went over when Albright pinned McGuinness after hitting a clothesline when he surprised Nigel.
Rocky Romero vs. Jack Evans (Street Fight)
Rocky attacked Jack as he made his entrance and then after Jack got the advantage he stopped the match and got on the mic and asked to make this a Street Fight. Overall, I just didn't get into this one. It was way too long for what it needed to be and just seemed to drag.
Post-Match Evans cuts a backstage promo.
Takeshi Morishima vs Erick Stevens
This was really good. Definitely the best match on the show so far. Stevens got a lukewarm reaction up his entrance but by the end of the match the crowd was chanting his name. Morishima dominated early and throughout the middle of the match. Stevens made his comeback and made several impressive moves that required brute strength- TKO, German Suplex and Doctor Bomb.
Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Austin Aries & Matt Cross (World Tag Team Title Match)
The Main Event turned out pretty good with everyone looking good and playing their role in the match.
Verdict:
This kind of felt like a "B" show as there wasn't that one or two great matches to put it over and it was missing a big Danielson or McGuinness singles match. Top match was Morishima/Stevens and then Briscoes vs Aries/Cross. But there isn't really anything that you must see from this show. Silas Young and Kenny King did have good showings in what I think was their first ROH matches.
